Zhuhai plant efficiency

We introduced latest generation PTA technology that reduces greenhouse gas, liquid and solid waste emissions in our Zhuhai, China, facility in 2015. The plant is so efficient that it's a net exporter of electricity to the grid

The INEOS Aromatics Zhuhai plant is based in the Guangdong-Hongkong-Macau Greater Bay Area (or GBA) of China, playing an important role in its sustainable economic development. The plant was the first to adopt our leading PTA technology in 2015, which significantly reduced emissions and waste. The combination of this technology and efforts of our local team to both continuously optimise operations and operate the plant with rigour make it one of the most efficient in the region.

Net exporter of electricity

Since our PTA technology was introduced in 2015, the plant has been able to capture the heat generated during the production process and turn it into electricity. Not only does that save consumption, it enables the plant to be a net exporter of electricity to the grid. As an example, total output reached 200 million kwh in 2021, the equivalent of reducing CO2 emissions by around 125,000 tons.

Award winning efficiency

In 2024, the Zhuhai plant was named an ‘Energy Efficiency Leader’ and benchmark enterprise in the PTA industry by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation in Beijing. It made our business the only producer to win this award for six years in succession since the national ranking program was expanded to include the production of purified terephthalic acid (or PTA).
