Creating values from water
The abundant supply of water available to be transformed into hydroelectric power makes it possible to melt energy-intensive black sand in the single furnace of the only European producer of titanium concentrate. This is a major competitive advantage.
The ilmenite smelter in Tyssedal is currently one of five of its kind in the world, and the only one in Europe. The smelter produces slag with a high content of titanium dioxide, which is later further processed and used as a white pigment in paints, plastic products, paper, ceramics and hygiene products. The smelter also produces high-purity pig iron. This is further processed and used in wind turbine parts, car parts, machine parts and tools, among other things.
Located at the end of a very long fjord surrounded by a series of small communities, the site employs a team of experts and a multi-cultural workforce. The communities in Odda & Tyssedal have a history and tradition of working in the metallurgical industry since 1908. This has ensured the availability of skilled workers since the start-up of the plant.
The turbines of the hydroelectric power plant that supply the site benefit from an abundant and powerful supply of water allowing for both a reduction of the site’s carbon footprint and very low energy costs. Water has been Norway’s “white coal” since the 19th century.
