Product Applications
INEOS’ products make an indispensable contribution to society and to a more sustainable future.
INEOS’ products make an indispensable contribution to society, such as preserving food and clean water, more lightweight transport, medical devices, clothing and telecommunication. They are also used in end applications that will play a critical role in the transition to net zero.
At INEOS O&P Europe, we are increasing our focus on high density polyethylene (HDPE) that meets the strong demand for durable high-end applications such as cables and pipes used for the following purposes:
- Pressure pipe grids for hydrogen transport
- Underground long-distance cable networks for wind farms connection and renewable power transport
- Supporting increase in electrification infrastructure e.g. for electric cars
- Support carbon footprint print reduction in CO2 capture, transport and storage processes

INEOS polymer used to create world’s first sustainable gas pipeline
INEOS produced bio-based high-density polyethylene (HDPE) has been used to create the world’s first fully sustainable gas pipeline. Installed by French gas utility network operator, GRDF, the pipeline only uses the low carbon footprint polymer. The HDPE is produced at INEOS’ plant in Lillo, Belgium. It is made from wood processing residues from the paper industry, to replace fossil fuel-derived feedstocks.

In October 2022, INEOS O&P Europe announced a €30m investment in the conversion of its plant in Lillo, at the Port of Antwerp, to enable its existing capacity to produce either monomodal or bi-modal grades of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). This will allow INEOS to meet the strong demand for durable high-end applications such as cable ducts and pipes used to transport green energy sources such as renewable power and hydrogen, while enabling the business to follow market trends as society reduces single use packaging.
