Geel logistics optimisation

Continuous improving efficiency and reducing emissions is standard practice across INEOS, it’s embedded in our culture. That includes the transportation of essential materials and our products.

Examples of how we have optimised logistics in Geel, Belgium

  • Built new terminal that uses an electric crane to load product containers onto barges - reducing noise and emissions levels
  • Switched to trucks powered by LNG (from diesel) to deliver product to a customer – reducing emissions
  • Switched to new Rhine barges that can deliver more product, at lower water levels, powered by smaller engines - improving fuel efficiency by 20% and reducing emissions
  • Built a private road connection to the Geel terminal - reduced the distance from plant to terminal from nearly 3km to 800m and eliminated 20,000 vehicle journeys from the public roads, reducing emissions and improving community relations
  • Built a new terminal beside the Geel plant where containers can be loaded (before, empty containers had to be transported to the plant from 10km away)  - eliminated 400,000km of road journeys, reducing emissions
  • Reduced the return of empty 30 foot containers from Italy and UK - eliminating duplicated journeys and reducing emissions
  • Collaborated with INEOS colleagues to optimize volumes of product transported in block trains - meaning fewer stops, shorter journeys, faster journeys and lower emissions
